Travel to Ethiopia: A mini guide

Ethiopia is a traveller’s dream, and it’s no wonder the country’s tourism industry is one of the fastest-growing in the world. Believed by many archaeologists to be the birthplace of the human race, this African gem is also known for landmarks like the holy city of Lalibela and the wondrous Simien Mountains.

Ethiopia's Culture

While Amharic is Ethiopia’s official language, around 80 other native tongues are spoken, with English also used across the country. After the Derg regime fell in 1991, the new constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia conferred all ethnic groups with the right to develop, promote and preserve their languages. This included allowing them to introduce mother-tongue education systems.

Religion permeates almost every aspect of Ethiopian life, with around half of the population belonging to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and a huge percentage practising Islam. Almost every national day has a religious aspect, including Meskel, a festival commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by the Roman Empress Helena, which is celebrated with huge feasts and bonfires. Meanwhile Timkat marks the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, with mass crowds partake in rituals and dancing.

Ethiopia's Economy

Ethiopia’s economic turnaround has been one of the greatest financial success stories of the 21st century. In 2000, it was the third-poorest country in the world, but by 2018 it was the world’s third-fastest growing economy, experiencing a 189% growth in GDP per capita over that period. Key to this transformation has been a massive increase in industrial activity, diversifying the economy away from agriculture. This is the result of a period of relative political stability, and huge foreign investment from China in particular.

Ethiopia's most popular destinations

As the tenth-largest country in Africa, covering 426,373 square miles, there is an abundance of destinations to explore in Ethiopia. Top of many visitors’ lists is the town of Lalibela, which is noted for its rock-cut Christian churches, including the iconic Church of Saint George. It is also close to Mount Abuna Yosef, one of the country’s largest mountains.

Talking of mountains, another one of Ethiopia’s tourist hotspots is the Semien Mountains in the north of the country. A World Heritage Site, they are characterised by their unique formation, consisting of spectacular plateaus separated by valleys. The mountains are also home to some notable wildlife, such as the walia ibex, the gelada, and the caracal.

Other Ethiopian attractions include its capital city Addis Ababa, and its array of museums, art galleries and markets, while the northern city of Gondar is also popular with visitors. Among its highlights are the Fasil Ghebbi castle, Kuskuam palace and the church of Debre Birhan Selassie.
